Who Was THAT Talking??!!

Ever hear a voice in your head? Or maybe you're like me, and it's voices, plural, that you hear? Or do you find yourself talking and wondering where the words came from that are coming out of your mouth? Well, I think I'm safe in saying that we're not alone, you and me. I'm thinking we have some good company in the hearing-voices-in-our-heads and saying-words-we-don't-know-where-they-came-from categories. Just ask someone, someone who'll give you an honest answer, and I'll bet they say they've heard someone talking, too. Just who are these people in our heads and who gave them permission to talk, anyway? Are they coming from outside ourselves or are they some part of us that we have isolated into just a talking voice? Where are the words coming from that are falling out of our mouths?

Maybe it's Horton because, as we know, Horton hears a who!

What do YOU do to feel better?

I’ve been pondering this question for myself and was wondering if anyone else ever considers just what it is that they do to feel better, to feel happier, to feel more upbeat, to feel joyful, to feel like rocking their world to the core of it’s existence.

Most of the things I do these days are pretty simple (I’ve been told it doesn’t take much to entertain me!):

  • find some sun and sit in it (or if there’s no sun, I google an image on my computer)
  • ride my bicycle down the street (or if in Portland, across a bridge or two in August)
  • brush my dog, trim her toe nails
  • cook something (I don’t even have to eat it, just cook it)
  • got to my fave place for a macchiato (or dream I’m there if it’s too far away to actually go there)
  • find a dish of lemon gelato
  • go to Disneyland
  • watch an episode of Modern Family that I’ve missed
  • dream of Crème brûlée in Paris
  • go somewhere, anywhere, just go
  • pick up a feather that some bird has left for me and stick it in my hair
  • look for shiny pieces of beach glass or unusual shells at the beach
  • etc. etc. etc. – the list is sooooo long!

Once upon a time, I would book myself on to a plane and fly somewhere. Or I’d go check out a restaurant that I hadn’t tried. Or I’d buy myself a new pair of Keens (I love my Keens!). But that was back in the days when I had a good-paying job with benefits, so now I’m learning to do things that are more cost-effective to my current budget. Some day, I’ll do those things again; in the meantime, I’m dreaming!

So, now, what about you? Do you have a list of things you like to do that gets you feeling better, happier, more cheerful? Are you stuck trying to figure out new things to do since your income, life situation, home environment, etc. has changed in the last year or two?
